It’s been several months since I’ve blogged…Here at the ranch we’ve spent fall and winter “hunkering down” as my human calls it. When I first heard that phrase, I consulted my pigtionary, which defines it ”to settle in or dig for a sustained period of time.” That sounds like us. Jazzie has her spot in the hay bales where she hunkers out of the wind and snow, in a perfect position to protect us all.
The alpacas have the barn where they spend way too much time hunkering – too lazy to leave – which gives my human no end of poo patrol (nice turn of phrase, don’t you think?). We are all hunkered in – some because of the season; others due to health issues or sitting with grief and loss. It sounds kind of depressing, but this is part of the rhythm of the ranch: a time to draw ourselves in, rest, take stock, and begin the renewal process for spring.
I heard my human describe it as an extremely challenging “mindful” experience. She had a lot of down time this winter. I don’t really understand the concept of mindful, although “mindless” describes Billy Goat to a T.
